Composer, photographer and filmmaker Phill Niblock's classic of experimental underground filmmaking with a sensational soundtrack by pianist Sun Ra and the members of his Solar Arkestra! Shot in the mid '60s, when the Arkestra was based in New York, this film was produced using a unique negative process and ultra-tight close-ups on the moving hands and mouths of the musicians. The result is a virtually abstract music film, mastered from a new print in all its incredibly sharp black & white glory.

Editor's Note

Spaced-out innovations and an eclectic, self-composed mythology characterized the work of legendary jazz musician Sun Ra, whose experimental spirit is mirrored here in Phill Niblock's vanguard film. A refreshed print of Niblock's groundbreaking but little-known work shows off the original black and white cinematography in spectacular clarity. Niblock also used a unique negative process, and composed the film almost entirely of ultra-tight close-ups of the musicians' hands and mouths, to create a new kind of music-based, non-narrative film. Shot in the 1960s and centered around the performance of Sun Ra on piano, backed by his Arkestra, this classic underground film is an abstract homage to an eccentric genius.
